Man has two independent but cooperating consciousnesses. You could say that we live in two worlds at once; partly in the concrete physical world, partly in the thought-world as we experience it. Is man mirroring the world? Is dualism a natural state or is man divided?

The duality of the soul

All beings are souled, the soul being the eternal and divine aspect within us. The soul is not material, it is pure consciousness. The soul can be described as the observing principle; "the one who notices". But even though the soul is beyond the material, it also has two sides. We can call these cooperating opposites the sensory-soul and the thought-soul. The sensory soul's task is to send out cosmic energy, the thought-soul is instead a receiver of energy.

The physical body can be said to be the instrument of the soul in the material world. Compare the body to a video camera; the lens (eye) captures the light. The light is converted into electrical signals (brain impulses) which are then stored in the camera's magnetic tape (memory). But the camera only picks up the signals, a cameraman (the soul) is needed who initiates the process and who experiences the process itself. This imperishable cameraman is the soul.

How then are we to understand both manifestations of the soul? There seems to be a need for an active principle which, so to speak, "scans" its surroundings. Parallel to this, a receiving principle is needed that registers and interprets the "echo" of the emitted radiation. The sensory-soul emits energy and seems to be constantly filled with an inner dialogue: "Should I do this or that." The thought-soul receives energy, it does not speak but seems to have a fixed rule of conduct: "This is how we usually do it.”

The conscience and the self

The sensory-soul is the thinking self that reflects on everything that happens and values it. The second soul, the thought-soul, is the autopilot that makes all our "unconscious" decisions, it is the human conscience. It is the sensory-soul that asks the question; did i lock the door? A check usually results in us finding the door very properly locked. But it is the thought-soul that, purely routinely, has performed the action (this is how we usually do it), therefore the event is not registered in the memory.

In some cases, the sensory-soul (self) may realize that something needs to change in the daily routines. The sensory-soul conducts an inner dialogue with itself along the lines of: "Now I've been drinking coffee in the morning for years, today I drink tea instead." The person in question is surprised when, the moment after, he sees himself measuring out coffee (as if nothing had happened). The thought-soul has immediately reversed the decision, it needs repeated conscious choices (21 times) to establish a new routine.

Talking to yourself doesn't have to be suspicious at all. On the contrary, it is a sign of good inner balance to be able to have a fruitful dialogue with one's conscience (which is what then happens). It is the sensory-soul that is responsible for the spoken words, while the thought-soul usually responds with gestures and facial expressions. But the sensory-soul can sometimes "clothe the thought-soul's opinion in words" which results in a regular spoken dialogue. It is important that both aspects of the soul are allowed to be expressed.

Many women have probably experienced the often agonizing decision-making process of choosing clothes in the morning. A conscious choice to take a particular dress can be undone in a second because the thought-soul had a "different opinion". Often it is a routine that then blocks the conscious choice. An additional difficulty can also arise as women (generally speaking) have a higher simultaneous capacity; the woman's brain hemispheres can function independently of each other.

Gender differences

Do women and men respectively use more of a certain soul aspect? It could possibly be that women are more comfortable with the speaking aspect of the soul; the mind soul. Men would then correspondingly have a stronger bond to the wordless consciousness of the thinking soul. But it's probably not that simple, because against this stands the fact that women are generally considered to have a more developed intuitive ability, a quality that likely must be connected to the wordless thinking soul.

More interesting is that women have "higher degree of lateralization", two independent centers of consciousness. This means in plain language that they have a word center and a image center respectively in each brain hemisphere. It may be that women, without consciously thinking about it, alternate between their centers of consciousness (a phenomenon that men at times gets to witness). Men are (as a rule of thumb) simpler creatures. They have one consciousness (do one activity at a time) but the focus is deep.

Strangely enough, one can still sense a spiritual difference between the sexes. Men usually experience the world as it is, they do not reflect so much on events afterwards. Women, on the other hand, first experience the world as it is, but then follows an equally important phase for them; they carefully consider what happened. A startling conclusion of the female perspective is that the world is only half real, the rest is how we actually experience it.

The soul out of balance

There appear to be conditions when one soul aspect, for some reason, is pushed back and becomes fully or partially inactive. One of these conditions can probably be linked to people with autism; the sensory-soul has here obviously withdrawn and the thought-soul is completely dominant. Autistics have a limited vocabulary but can have an almost improbable number or image memory. They do not take initiative and need stable routines, changes are must be worn in.

Is there also a corresponding state, when the sensory-soul has become inactive? We probably find that equivalent in people called psychopaths. Distinctive for the psychopath is precisely his inability to show compassion. As you may know, they are extremely verbal and master the art of imitating emotions and empathy. But behind the mask hides a cold and calculating mind that without hesitation acts for its own gain and for personal benefits.

The traditional image of the conscience is usually depicted as a small angel, sitting on one shoulder. On the other shoulder, of course, sits a red little devil with a trident, corresponding to our ego. We can easily recognize the sides of the soul in these images. The thought-soul is the conscience, the little angel, that tells us to follow the narrow path. The sensory-soul is the ego or self, the little devil, which pulls in different directions with its desires. The question is whether the self needs to be tamed?

Yoga and meditation

Consciousness is like two horses in front of a cart. It is desirable that both pull in the same direction, otherwise indecision occurs. In other words, it is a good idea to be friends with your conscience. You can actually hear it in the name, Con (With) – Science/Sence (Mind), which is a simultaneous or parallel knowledge. But especially in the West there is a strong imbalance that favors the sensory-soul and the rational self. Fortunately, there are methods that calm the mind and soul and regain equilibrium.

Through conscious training, one can silence the sensory-soul's "babble" and gain access to the wordless wisdom that the thought-soul possesses. The thought-soul has contact with knowledge that is not limited to the present life. This knowledge can benefit us in dreams but also in physical and mental exercises such as Yoga, Tai Chi and Ki Gong. An important part of the exercise is to see yourself as an observer of life and not only as a participant.

But the sensory-soul must not be fought after all, it should only be cultivated. You must after all be able to experience and enjoy life to the fullest. It is therefore necessary to limit the desires of the self (which cause suffering to others). This happens by rewarding activities that satisfy the self without harming ambient entities. Operations are channeled to areas that can be considered reasonably harmless. That sensory-soul and thought-soul complementing each other is the goal.

Human personality

The individual personality has nothing to do with consciousness itself. The personality also belongs to the bodily expression. The personality develops during 2x7 life periods, then we advance to a personality with a different and higher orientation. It is the sensory-soul that scans (reads) the body, the personality and the seven senses; taste, touch, balance/orientation, smell, hearing, sight and memory. The thought-soul then registers the impressions.

What happens between lifetimes, when the soul no longer has a body to sense? After death, when man's heavier and also his subtle bodies are dissolved, the soul perceives its own inner "sphere" (the Self World). But the soul does not stop there, it then perceives its higher embodiment which is God or the Universe. The soul eventually enters the divine disembodied realm. Only then is the circle closed and the soul can return (reborn) to a human form.
